How to Get More Google Reviews — the Right (Compliant) Way

Reviews drive ranking and trust, but the rules changed in 2026. Here’s how to earn more reviews compliantly — by asking every customer, the same way.

Reviews are one of the strongest signals in local search — both for how you rank and for whether a customer chooses you. But the rules changed in 2026, and some tactics that used to be common are now violations. Here’s how to earn more reviews the right way.

First, what’s no longer allowed

In April 2026 Google prohibited review practices that interfere with collecting honest, representative feedback. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s rule does the same. In plain terms, you may no longer pre-select which customers get invited based on how satisfied they appear, route some customers toward a public review while quietly sending others to a private channel instead, or offer anything of value in exchange for posting. On-premises pressure setups and quotas are out too.

These tactics carry real penalties now — and they were never a good idea anyway. A rating built on a representative sample of customers is more credible and more durable.

The compliant method that actually works

  1. Ask every customer, the same way, every time. After each completed job, send the same review invitation to everyone — no pre-screening.
  2. Make it effortless. A direct link by text or email, sent about 1–3 hours after the job when satisfaction is highest, removes friction.
  3. Recover unhappy experiences in parallel — not instead. If someone signals they weren’t happy, get a private alert so you can make it right personally. They still receive the same invitation; you simply also get the chance to fix the problem.
  4. Respond to every review. Thank positive reviewers and reply thoughtfully to critical ones. A calm, helpful reply to a hard review often impresses future customers more than a wall of perfect ratings.
  5. Keep it steady. Recent reviews matter more than your all-time total, so a consistent trickle beats a one-time push.

Automate it (compliantly)

Doing this by hand is where it falls apart. Our AI Reputation Engine sends the same post-job request to every customer, alerts you privately when someone needs a personal touch, and drafts review replies for your one-tap approval — all built to stay on the right side of Google and the FTC.
